Calling vs. Creativity
My wife was watching Oprah yesterday, and Oprah was discussing a new class she was putting online that was designed to help people find their calling. The class was led by Marcus Buckingham, a former senior researcher at the Gallup Organization, has lately been working as a consultant and author focused on finding personal strengths. He now is bringing his work to the mainstream.I was a little lukewarm about his approach. A key point was the idea of calling, which is the idea that each of us are "called" to one specific vocation/role/what-have-you in the world. This is essentially a Divinely-led mission-statement that we need to discover. Marcus sets out to find what it was we've always wanted to do, and to create a job role based on this calling.
It's a really nice idea. There's this one thing that we're called here to do today, and everything else is a pale shadow of what we could have if we are following our calling. Looking at it a little closer, though, it doesn't sound as effective to me. I don't mean that just from a cynical standpoint. The idea of the Divine should be huge, which means huge with potential. Is there really only one thing or one set of things that would be right for someone? I want to suggest a counter-view to this idea of calling, being creativity. What if, instead of one job we have to figure out, whatever Divinity there is behind the universe is looking to be a co-creator with us?
No matter what is beyond us, I like the idea that there isn't necessarily a fixed endpoint. I like the idea of serendipity, of new things arising out of our work that nobody expected. I like the idea of God being surprised at what we do, and liking to be surprised. And if we're on our own, I hope we can pull greatness out of ourselves in unexpected ways.
Overall, Marcus' approach did seem to have a lot of creativity in it. He challenged people to do things that are outside of their routine, and their rut. He made people be more introspective on how they lived their lives. We all need to do that sometimes. But I like the title of Marcus' first book: First, Break All the Rules. I don't know that any of us will ever know with absolute certainty that we are on the path that God/The Universe/etc. had intended for us. I think it's better to experiment, and see what can be found out. Use your greatest strength. Challenge your greatest weakness. But just do something.
Just my thoughts. I'll put it out to other folks out there: do you like the idea of a calling? What do you think makes up a calling? Can calling mix with creativity?

My opnion is don't whine if your not going to do anything about it.
I guess it takes different things for different people to get them moving if oprah can help you find your "calling" then so be it but after that call has been answered will they stick with it??? I think the later part of the question would be a hell of a lot more interesting then the actual hunt.

Intriguingly enough I believe in CALLINGS but even within that concept, creativity means we may EXPRESS that calling through a number of vehicles.
The idea of a calling is a little like in my work as a Online Personals Expert, Dating and Romantic Relationship Coach where people have this pipe dream of a Soul Mate as if there is ONLY ONE PERSON OUT THERE who would fit with them, and in our fears, we protect ourselves from abandonment and rejection thinking, "maybe they are in Africa or Croatia, while I'm here in the US... Canada... the UK... Mexico... I'll NEVER meet them, so why try?"
My calling is an Evangelist.
So, I have multiple ways to EXPRESS that. Whatever I'm passionate about, well, I am naturally evangelizing about it. Ergo, I'm a dating and relationship coach, because I am passionate about this. I do Christian evangelizing as well (yes, indeed, Street Evangelism, handing out Gospel tracts and leading people who wanted it to the Lord, where is Dave Lakhani, who would probably not be surprised by that one), Technology Sales because I salivate over technology.

I absolutely LOVE this part, Aaron!
I've spent a lot of time and money over the years, searching for my 'calling' to come to no actual point of 'enlightenment'. Fact is, we are co-creators working full-time creating our own worlds within worlds. I'm positive God (the creator) is often surprised from this lifeform!
I think that Oprah is a great catalyst to get people moving whether or not I happen to agree with her, I believe she is a positive force in a lot of people's lives and, to me, that in itself is very important.

I see a lot of teenagers in my practice for acne and question quite a few of them on what they want to do the rest of their lives. Most reply in a frustrated tone, "I don't know." I respond with telling them that even I don't know what I wantto do the rest of my life. They key lies in noting what you enjoy and whta your gifts are, Your gifts are what comes easy for you that other people have toput an effort into. If you focus on these principles, I think you could find a calling.

Great post. I liken the one calling to there being only one person in the entire would that you were/are destined to be married to. What a bunch of BS. I think we each have nature abilities and desires that we are given/genetically inherit/are blessed with depending on your perspective, And when we find a way to do what we enjoy and are good at that is serendipity. And I like to think that God/The Universal Mind likes to be surprised and often smiles at our humanness.

Aaron,
Very nice post! I believe very strongly that there is creativity involved. Whenever I've mused on the idea that I have a calling, I get worried that I've missed it. Life is too wonderful and varied to get hung up on doing it perfectly.

Intriguing!
I align somewhere between Scott and April...not that there is just one job or soul mate...but that there is place where your natural abilities(gifts) and your interests line up with your passions and where you see a need...and then you fullfill it and in doing so you find fullfillment.

Interesting post Aaron, I guess people tend to resonate alot and end up settling at point where there in their Comfort zone or Calling zone , in both work and personal life .

Why don't we define our calling as, doing the thing that gives us personal significance. It can but doesn't have to be our job. The best description I have read is that our calling is "The most important thing you can do in which you would be most difficult to replace." I would add that it is the most significant thing you can do NOW, where you are and with the resources at hand.

I soooo believe in a personal mission.
"Calling" fires off the Leader telling me to stay poor while they live in a castle.

I prefer the word "purpose" to "calling". In my mind, "purpose" involves an element of choice where a "calling" sounds like it's been chosen for us. But this may just be my personal interpretation of their meaning.
I actually read Buckingham's book "Now, Discover Your Strengths" and took his strengths-finder test last year. Whilst I wasn't expecting much, it turned out to be pretty accurate and insightful.
Great post. Thank you!
